The petroleum industry is one of the most volatile segments of the national economy. Subject to the law of supply and demand, it is also subject to trades in the commodities market, the health of the manufacturing industry and consumer behavior.

Besides marking the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day celebrates the American workers and their contributions to the economic health of the nation. The composition of that labor force has changed since the holiday was instituted in the 1880s, and the last century brought the most sweeping changes of all.
