  • September 9, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — A lightning bolt blew a hole in the roof of the Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School on Sychar Road on Tuesday evening.

The bolt struck at 5:09 p.m., in the middle of a heavy storm that drenched Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon Assistant Fire Chief Chris Menapace said the bolt hit a cupola and blew out fascia board, drywall and light fixtures.

There was no fire, but the 2-by-2-foot hole in the roof will cost about $5,000 to repair.
