  • Thorne named Little Miss Tomato

  • September 10, 2009

FREDERICKTOWN — For the past 32 years, the tomato show has been the venue to end the summer season with a blast, and highlighting the jamboree is the Little Miss Tomato Contest. This year, 24 6-year-old girls were contestants in the 2009 Little Miss Tomato Contest.

Participants, who must be 6 years old by Sept. 1, are judged on a two-minute interview (15 points), appearance (10 points) and poise (five points).

Winning the 2009 Little Miss Tomato, with a perfect score, was Macy Thorne, daughter of J.R. and Jamie Thorne. First runner-up was Emma Reed, daughter of Jonathon and Tiffany Reed; second runner-up, Abbagayle Heironimus, daughter of Joseph and Brandie Calkins; and third runner-up, Gabrielle Daniels, daughter of Chad and Elizabeth Daniels.

With this year’s theme, “Fun in the Sun” to keep the last strains of summer fun from fading too fast, the event’s moderator, Julie Chester, with the help of last year’s winner, Mckenna Davidson, asked contestants about their summer activities.

Thorne was excited to talk about the two solos she sang at church this summer: “Happy Birthday Jesus” and “Open the eyes of my heart Lord.”

When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Thorne happily replied, “I want to be a nurse when I grow up because they take care of people and babies.”

Thorne received a perfect score for her interview — during which she lively answered questions about herself and family — her appearance, and her poise while on stage.

“Tell me about your little brother,” Chester asked first runner-up Reed, during the interview portion of the contest.

“He likes to hold my hand a lot and we like to play a lot. ... I help him take baths and we like to play in my room upstairs,” Reed said, who also talked about her little dog, Rider.

“I went to Disney World,” answered second runner-up Heironimus, when asked about her trip to Florida this summer. Seeing all of the Disney princesses was her most-liked thing about the vacation with her family. Heironimus said Cinderella was her favorite character.

“She’s so beautiful and she’s so beautiful when she’s dancing,” said Heironimus.

Daniels, when asked what her favorite place to eat was, simply said Red Robins. Why?

“Because you always get to eat whatever you want,” she said.

Enjoying the interview, Daniels took the microphone and asked to speak. Saying her Uncle Chuck always plays the Wii, she pointed to him in the crowd.

“And he does boxing and always wins,” she said.
