Bridge work

On Wednesday, workers from Mel Troyer’s construction company installed a precast concrete deck in a single day on Bridge No. 2 on the Heart of Ohio Trail, using a crane that attached to the bridge itself. Watching the installation are, from left, Knox County Parks District director Kim Marshall, Commissioner Robert Wise, John McMurtry, Commissioner Allen Stockberger and Brian Hogg. Marshall said the miniature crane system saved the beauty of the site, because several large, old sycamore trees would had to have been cut down to install the bridge deck with a standard crane. The steel understructure of the bridge revealed that it was made by the Mount Vernon Bridge Co., although its age is uncertain. One clue is a lone graffito that says “J.D.E. 1937.” (Mark S. Jordan)
