  • Work begins on Upper Gilchrist Road

MOUNT VERNON — The water problems creating the breakup of a section of Upper Gilchrist Road are being addressed with a $212,000 grant to Monroe Township from the Ohio Public Works Commission. Work is under way by Small’s Sand and Gravel Co. to bury drainage tile under the road.

The 4-inch perforated plastic tile is placed in a trench 24 inches under the road surface; the trench is then filled with gravel, allowing water to flow through the gravel and into the tile. A total of 11,188 feet of the tile is to be installed, and is expected to be completed this week.

To prepare for the new paving on the surface, the old pavement will be rototilled. The new road surface will be asphalt with a chip-and-stone seal on top. The grant money covers a 1.1-mile section of road.
