  • Knox County election results finalized

  • December 9, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Board of Elections has certified the official final results from the November 2009 elections, confirming and clarifying the results of races throughout the county. The final numbers settled an apparent tie in the race for Gambier Village Council and reordered two of the finalists in the Mount Vernon Schools Board of Education race.

According to Board of Elections Director Kim Horn, the election had a 44 percent turnout.

“It was more than I had anticipated,” Horn said, adding that early absentee voting remained popular in this election, as well as previous elections.

The apparent tie in Gambier was based on preliminary results seen on election night. The deadlock was between husband and wife Lee and Audra Cubie, both of whom have served multiple terms on Village Council. The preliminary count found a tie between the two, but the addition of a single provisional or absentee ballot in the final count found Audra Cubie edging her husband out by one vote, thus taking the fourth and final seat up for election.

After the count of provisional ballots and provisional absentee ballots was added to the preliminary ballot figures, the winners of the Mount Vernon Schools Board of Education remained Stephen L. Thompson and Paula Barone. But where preliminary results showed Thompson coming in first by one vote, 3,477 to 3,476, the final results show Barone coming out on top, 3,542 to 3,512.

Numbers in other races were revised as necessary, without changing any other outcomes.

Horn said the next pending election is a special election being held Feb. 2, 2010, for members of the North Fork School District. Voter registration deadline is Jan. 4, 2010.
