  • New drive-thru, Chad Bo’s, opens

  • December 30, 2009

MOUNT VERNON — “Welcome to Chad Bo’s, what’d ya have? What’d ya have?”

Customers might be surprised to hear this called out to them as they drive up to the window or order carryout at the recently opened Chad Bo’s on 312 S. Mulberry St. But this drive-thru is one of a kind with its homemade Coney sauce and specially made hot dogs.

Owner Greg Talbott said his hot dogs are one-of-a-kind because they are made especially for Chad Bo’s by a meat packer from a special recipe.

Talbott retired in 1992 from the Mount Vernon Fire Department after 20 years of service. In these tough economic times, he looked to supplement his income and decided to start a drive-thru. The drive-thru was named after his late son, Chad.

“He loved hot dogs and we always called him, Chad Bo, so that’s how we got the name,” said Talbott.

Chad Bo’s offers a range of fast foods for anyone on the go. Hot dogs from regular sizes to quarter pounders to foot longs. Bratwursts and Italian sausages as well as sandwiches — chicken salad, tuna salad, roast beef, homemade BBQ beef and pork, Reuben, and pork loin. Soups are made daily and can be ordered by the cup or bowl. And customers are allowed to choose from an array of toppings of hot pepper mustard, horseradish sauce, BBQ sauce, Thousand Island dressing, brown and yellow mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise and pickles. For a small charge, customers can also get cheese and homemade coney sauce.

“The coney sauce is all homemade and is very good. It’s what you taste when we were growing up — the good hot dogs and the good coney sauce, not just something out of a can,” said Talbott.

All of their bread products are made fresh daily by the Asetta Bread Co. of Fredericktown.

“Starting the first of the year, we will be running specials every day, like cabbage rolls and everybody has been hollering for liver and onions,” he said. “Well, when you come through here, you’re not just going to get your ‘ram, bam, thank you ma’am’ liver and onions you always get, but this will be baked with gravy and onions, and with [a side] of mashed potatoes.”

Chad Bo’s is accessibile from South Main Street as well as South Mulberry Street.

Chad Bo’s is opened Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (winter hours). Pick-up is available and can be called in at 392-DOGS (3647).
