Pharmacist part of Haiti quake relief

Slippery slope

The South Gay Street grade became very slippery Monday afternoon after a couple of inches of snow fell. Several tractor-trailer trucks, including these two, worked to climb the hill. All eventually made it. Traffic throughout the city of Mount Vernon moved at a snail’s pace in the late afternoon while city streets crews prepared to plow and apply salt. (Virgil Shipley)

Young hero honored by MVFD

Seven-year-old Mount Vernon resident Ian Whitaker recently received a letter of commendation from the Mount Vernon Fire Department recognizing his actions when he rendered first aid to his grandfather, Douglas Whitaker.
