  • Residents concerned about development

  • February 18, 2010

FREDERICKTOWN — The old school on Taylor Street is gone. Two and one-half acres of the property have been sold to Fredericktown native Tom Carter and some residents are unhappy with Carter’s plans to build condominiums on the site. They expressed those concerns at a recent public hearing regarding his request to have the zoning changed from R1, single family residential, to a PND, planned neighborhood development designation.

The R1 zoning came into effect when the school board first proposed selling the parcel at public auction. Superintendent Jim Peterson said the last auction bid of $43,000 was rejected as too low because the board would have had to pay auctioneer costs as well as closing costs. Carter offered $50,000 and agreed to pay all closing costs, which Peterson said means the school district comes out ahead.
