MOUNT VERNON — One of the delights of living in a community with lots of talented performers is that a variety of acts can be assembled into a cabaret evening of entertainment without the full-blown logistical nightmares of six weeks of rehearsal for a large cast.
When each act has its own material, rehearsed independently, only a handful of group rehearsals are needed to put it together. But this production ease wasn’t the only reason Susan Kahrl of the Mount Vernon Players proposed the “February Follies,” performing Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, at 8 p.m. at ThePlace@TheWoodward.
“The dead of winter is a good time to warm up with some music,” Kahrl said.
Plus, she added, it serves to revive an old Players’ tradition of cabaret shows, which were popular about 20 years ago, and it helps keep active Players programming taking place at The Place, which has become a popular downtown destination.
Kahrl enlisted fellow Players Nancy Jantsch and Jeff Putnam to serve as recruiters and musical directors, shaping the acts to a high polish.
“It’s like a gathering of friends,” Jantsch said in describing the rehearsal process and the feel of the show, which is achieving flow in the late part of the rehearsal phase by having all the acts rehearse together and help each other out in terms of flow and stage business. Jantsch said this gives the 1 1/2 hour show a little more structure than a concert.
The evening will feature a variety of songs celebrating February as a time for love, ranging from romance to family, from the humorous to the poignant. The opening and closing group number, featuring all of the performers, will be the song “Seasons of Love” from the hit Broadway show “Rent.”
Putnam said the songs in the rest of the show range from the 1920s up to those of recent vintage, including piano songs and guitar songs, a Canadian song, a Latin American song, Broadway songs, ’50s rock songs, a torch song and a country song.
“One of the most exciting things about this show is that all the performers are doing songs they chose, ones they really like to sing,” Putnam said. “It definitely shows in the performances.”
Performers will include Kahrl, Jantsch and Putnam, in solos as well as in groups. Kahrl joins Susan Moreland and Mary Rugola-Dye to form a vocal trio known as The Dante Sisters, with Rugola-Dye singing a solo number, too. Putnam joins with Duane Barber to form The Harmony Brothers.
Barber will also be featured in solos, as will Dana Kemmer, who will also join The Harmony Brothers for one number. Cathy Marcellino and Marlene Wilson, a mother/daughter team, will perform together, as will Cathy and her husband, Vince Marcellino. Many of the acts will be accompanied by Lynn Jurkowitz on the piano, while others will feature Putnam on the guitar. A few extra treats are in store, as well, the organizers said.
A special offer is available for patrons interested in attending on Saturday night. A “Follies Special” meal will be available at Sips Coffee House, featuring soup, salad, a beverage and dessert at 7 p.m. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling Sips at 392-2233.
The performances will take place at ThePlace@TheWoodward, 111 S. Main St. Tickets will be available at the door. For further information, contact Kahrl at 501-4892.
