  • City unearths problem when digging out from snowstorm

  • February 20, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — As residents, businesses and officials continue to dig out from several snowstorms in the past month, the city of Mount Vernon discovered a problem on Public Square.

While cleaning the sidewalks around the Civil War monument, workers from the parks department noticed a depression in the sidewalk on the east side of the square. Underground cameras and other equipment have indicated a problem with the 18-inch clay storm sewer line that runs from Gay Street through the square.

“We’re assuming the clay line is broken. We’ve used our equipment and the cameras can only get so far because of the massive amount of stone and debris there,” said Cameron Keaton, Mount Vernon City engineer.
