  • Shelby man killed during accident-filled weekend

  • April 5, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — A Shelby man was killed and his passenger injured in a one-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday at 5 a.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Ryan G. Robertson, 43, Shelby, was killed when his Chevy Astro Van left Ohio 586, just south of Crouch Road.

A passenger, Derek Beard, 44, also of Shelby, was flown from the scene by MedFlight helicopter to Ohio State University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The hospital did not have a listing for Beard today.

The patrol said they were driving north when the van drifted off the right side of the road, striking a culvert that vaulted the van into the air before coming to rest on its top. Alcohol is an unknown factor; the crash remains under investigation.

A Centerburg woman walked away from a crash Sunday morning on Ohio 314 at Gilbert Road, north of Centerburg. The OSHP said Kelly McCloskey, 21, was northbound when her car left the right side of the road and went into a deep ditch. The car ended about 200 feet up the ditch after hitting the end of a culvert header that is about 3 feet deep under Gilbert Road.

The car flipped over the intersection end over end, and rolled sideways before coming to rest another 150 feet away. When the Central Ohio Joint Fire District medics arrived, they found McCloskey standing outside the car. She was taken to Knox Community Hospital for treatment. The patrol said she was wearing her seat belt. The patrol has charged McCloskey with driving under the influence and failure to control.

It was dark Friday night when a deer ran into the path of a motorcycle riden by Chad Marsahl, 30, Centerburg, on Ohio 661 at the southern edge of Mount Vernon.

He and his passenger, Shadow Butcher, 30, Howard, were thrown off the motorcycle. Both were wearing helmets; Butcher was knocked out but regained conciousness as they were being treated by Mount Vernon medics.

She was flown by a MedFlight helicopter to Ohio State University Medical Center for treatment. She is listed in serious condition today. The patrol said Marsahl took himself to KCH for a checkup.

A Sycamore Road man was charged with driving under the influence and failure to control after a crash Sunday at 4:19 p.m. The OSHP said Mark Haywood, 49, was driving at high speed westbound on Berger Road, a half mile east of Ohio 661, when his car went out of control on the loose gravel road.

The car fishtailed on the gravel, left the road, hit two trees and rolled onto its top. A carton of beer and several other cans of beer spilled from the car, according to the patrol. Haywood and his passenger, James Pierce, 58, Butcher Road, were not injured.
