MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon firefighters quickly pried a door open to release three people from a wrecked car on Martinsburg Road on Monday afternoon. The occupants, the driver, Steven Smith, 58, and Sharon Hunter, 65, both of Mount Vernon, and James Smith, 67, Howard, were not injured in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 2:55 p.m. on Martinsburg Road at the intersection Glen Road south of Mount Vernon. According to the patrol report, Robert Redman, 46, Gambier, was westbound on Glen Road and pulled his Jaguar in front of Smith’s Chevrolet Cavalier. Redman was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign.

A car driven by Lisette Altizer, 45, Centerburg, caught fire on Main Street in Centerburg on Monday at 4:50 p.m. The patrol said the Central Knox County Joint Fire District firefighters were able to confine the fire to the engine compartment.
