Astronaut aimed for excellence, stars
The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Knox County handed out awards to its contest winners at its annual meeting Thursday at The Dan Emmett Conference Center. Abby Altizer of Centerburg, left, was the overall winner, and Levi Zolman of Mount Vernon was a first-place winner. Burning brightly
The two Fredericktown men received the Flame of Distinction recognition award Thursday evening from the Fredericktown Community Fire District. From left are Assistant Fire Chief Dewayne Canter, Don Huggins, Skip Lantz and Chief Scott Mast. Huggins and Lantz are successful in raising funds to assist Fredericktown groups and organizations such as the American Red Cross Knox County Chapter, The Salvation Army and the fire district, among other agencies. Highland wrestler wins national title
Aislinn McLaughlin, a sixth-grader at Highland Middle School, won the 70-pound middle school division at the 13th Annual United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championship, hosted by Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti on April 2 and 3. McLaughlin edged out Mackenzie Moore from Michigan, 4-1, in the finals to win her first National Championship. She also won her third USGWA State Championship in four years in Mantua on March 13. During the season, McLaughlin wrestles mostly against boys, winning tournaments at Highland and Groveport-Madison, and was even recognized by State Representative Margaret Ann Ruhl for her achievements.
