  • A celebration of Earth Day was held Sunday at the Kenyon Athletic Center. The event was sponsored by Kenyon College, along with Knox Community Hospital, the Knox County Board of Health and the Knox County Parks District.

Two young people walked away from this crash when their pickup rolled off the road into the creek bed Saturday night. Two Fredericktown men received the Flame of Distinction recognition award Thursday evening from the Fredericktown Community Fire District. From left are Assistant Fire Chief Dewayne Canter, Skip Lantz, Don Huggins and Chief Scott Mast. Huggins and Lantz are successful in raising funds to assist Fredericktown groups and organizations such as the American Red Cross Knox County Chapter, The Salvation Army and the fire district, among other agencies. A principal fundraiser is the annual car show and bluegrass festival held each August. Nearly 200 attended the event, held at the Central Ohio Joint Fire District firehouse. A number of gifts were raffled off from area businesses. The festival will run June 23 through June 26. Clear Fork won the Division II/III title in both girls and boys action, while Mount Vernon swept Division I honors. Roden failed to clear the mark, but still won the event with her 5-1 jump. Mount Vernon’s Sadie Malone clears the final hurdle in her leg of the Division I 4x100-meter Shuttle Hurdle Relay at Saturday’s Yellow Jacket Relays. Mount Vernon won the event and the overall title. Jeff Henderson of Columbus and Amy DeMania of Nashville, Tenn., were the overall winners in the Earth Day Half Marathon, held in Gambier on Sunday. Henderson finished in 1:24:46, and DeMania in 1:38:43. Karen Meraw and Mark Porostosky won the full marathon, respectively. Meraw, who is from Detroit, Mich., ran a 3:20:37, and Porostosky finished in 2:54.
