MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Farmers Market will have a new twist this year. Each month it will feature a vegetable of the month; the vegetable or other variety of produce will be in season during that particular month.
The market begins Saturday and will run weekly through Oct. 30. It is held on Public Square from 9 a.m. to noon.
May is asparagus month, and this month’s market will feature a demonstration by Paul Higgins, certified executive chef.
“Asparagus is the first crop of the season and the idea is to get people interested in it,” he said. “I will really be very simple. I’m going to do an asparagus soup; a creamy asparagus soup that doesn’t have any cream in it. It’s something that suits everybody’s tastes but it isn’t real heavy.
