GAMBIER — Arbor Day was celebrated Friday at Wiggin Street Elementary School with a tree planting and a talk about the meaning of Arbor Day. Students also heard a report about the village’s program to use GPS to make a survey of all the trees in the village.
“We were talking about a project the Village of Gambier Shade Tree Commission was undertaking,” said Jim Kelly, chairman of the commission. “We are doing a survey, a tree inventory of all of the street trees in Gambier village. We’ve purchased a GPS receiver and the goal is to do a map showing all of the trees in the village, the genus and species of the trees, and the size and the health of each tree. The goal there is to have a set of data that will help us manage our urban forests better in the future.”
Students at the school will participate in the project in coming years.
