  • Six-year-old Granville prodigy plays Carnegie Hall

  • May 4, 2010

GRANVILLE — Gavin George has struck gold. More specifically, the 6-year-old piano prodigy was recently awarded a gold medal by the American Association for the Development of Gifted and Talented and featured in a performance at Carnegie Hall.

The son of Eric and Mary George of Granville, Gavin began lessons at the age of 3 1/2. Internationally known piano teacher Mary Craig Powell immediately discovered the boy had perfect pitch.

“She could play a note or group of notes without Gavin looking, then he’d come over to the piano and play the same ones,” Mary George said after the family’s return from New York City.

Six months into lessons, he began reading music. Three years in, he began music composition lessons. Now, just short of his seventh birthday, he has performed in America’s most revered concert hall.

The association which ended up propelling Gavin to Carnegie Hall was found after his parents started looking for other talented young pianists, so the boy wouldn’t be isolated as a prodigy.
