  • Sidewalk bids under budget

  • May 8, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Mayor Richard K. Mavis announced the city opened bids Friday morning for the sidewalk and crosswalk project for Pleasant Street and Wooster and Sychar roads with three of the five bids coming in under city estimates.

The city engineer’s estimate for the Community Development Block Grant project was $366,696.50. The lowest bid was from Layton Excavating of Newark. Its bid was for $332,343.56 or more than $34,000 under the estimate. The bid will need to undergo scrutiny by the city engineer’s office before it is approved to make sure the bid covers all the requirements of the project.

“If the lowest bid meets all the requirements, then we don’t even look at the second lowest bid,” Mavis said. “The bid is then approved by the board of control which is made up of [safety-service director] David Glass and me.”

Mavis reported that Jeff Oliver, superintendent of public buildings and lands, told him the construction projects at the waterpark are under way.
