  • Students celebrate achievements with ice cream

  • May 10, 2010

CENTERBURG — Centerburg Elementary’s BUG Club doesn’t really have anything to do with entomology. It has to do with Bringing Up Grades, and children who do so literally experience the sweet taste of success. To celebrate improved grades, parent volunteers like Sally Noble treat the scholars to ice cream sundaes with all of the fixings.

During one of the recent BUG Club ice cream socials, third-graders Luke Holsopple, Tyler Edwards and Morgan Mead were enjoying the tangible rewards for their hard work.

Asked how they qualified to attend, each said it is necessary to bring up one’s grades. For example, Morgan got all A’s this past grading period; Tyler said he had three B’s and successfully brought two of them up to A’s.

The boys talked about how they accomplished their BUG goal. They said they studied more at home, tried to complete and turn in all homework on time, and listened more carefully to their teachers. The biggest key, they agreed was “no goofing off.”

Velvet Ice Cream donates the frozen treat and volunteers bring in an assortment of toppings so the children can customize their sundaes to their own taste.
