MOUNT VERNON — The following Memorial Day observances will be held in the area:
Brandon — On Sunday, a parade will form at the park south of Brandon. At 1:30 p.m., the parade will march to the cemetery behind the Brandon Methodist Church, where services will be held. Following services in the cemetery, another service will be held in the church with special speaker Kevin Henthorn, director of the Knox County Veterans Service Office; and the McManaway Family Singers.
Mount Vernon — Mount Vernon’s Memorial Day Parade will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the theme “Heroes One and All.” The parade entries will travel East High Street from Catherine Street to Public Square, where services will follow.
Fredericktown — Assemble on public square Monday, at 9:30 a.m. with flag raising at 9:45 by Boy Scouts, followed by national anthem, invocation and laying of wreath. Parade will start at 10 a.m. and go to Forest Cemetery, where memorial address will be given by Sfc. Kenneth Hart.
Danville — Parade will form Monday at the square and march to the Danville Memorial Park at 10 a.m. A service will follow in the park with Mike Beheler, a teacher at Danville High School, as the speaker. The American Legion Post 650 will have a fish fry from 4 to 6 p.m., open to the public, at the Legion home.
Utica — On Monday at 8 a.m. the Utica American Legion Post 92 will do a gun salute at several area cemeteries, concluding with a memorial at 9:45 a.m. at Veterans Park, next to the Utica Fire Department. A service and program will be held at 11 a.m. at Utica American Legion Post 92 with a special speaker. A light lunch will follow at the Legion hall, which is open to the public.
Bloomfield Cemetery — Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Bloomfield Cemetery, County Road 204, Centerburg. Invocation and benediction will be given by Pastor Larry Carnes, Sparta United Methodist Church. Included in the program will be decorated Vietnam War veteran Larry Standley as the guest speaker, the Highland High School Junior ROTC and the HHS marching band.
Centerburg — On Monday a parade will form around 10:30 a.m. at the post office. It will proceed to Eastview Cemetery at approximately 10:40 a.m., and a service will be held at the cemetery at 11. The service will include members of the ROTC from the Knox County Career Center providing the color guard and the speaker will be Dennis Clausing, Department of Ohio first vice commander.
Offices to close for holiday
The office of the Mount Vernon News will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. The deadline for obituaries for the May 31 edition is 3 p.m. Sunday, May 30.
Other area businesses and offices that will be closed on Memorial Day include:
•Mid-Ohio Transit Authority, which will reopen for business as usual on Tuesday, June 1.
•Knox Metropolitan Housing Authority, including the office handling the CHIP housing rehabilitation activities for the city of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
•Knox County Department of Job & Family Services; includes Workforce Department, Opportunity Knox One Stop Employment Training, Public Assistance, Child Support Enforcement, and Children and Family Services.
