  • Chiefs talk of training, communications

  • May 18, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Fire Chiefs Association met Monday to get an update on first responder training programs and to clarify emergency radio procedures.

Jane Marlow, director of the Adult Workforce Education program at the Knox County Career Center, addressed recent personnel changes in the Public Safety Program, which trains first responders such as medics. The program director and medical director both resigned this year, leaving the program incomplete for current students. Marlow said that earlier Monday, prior to the association’s meeting, Dr. Tracy Schermer had signed on to be the program’s medical director.

“Dr. Schermer is passionate about public safety,” Marlow said, adding that the program would be extended from week to week until the medical director was satisfied the students were ready to test.

As director of record, Marlow said her focus was on finishing the current classes and then reorganizing as personnel and staff become available to resume the classes. She asked the chiefs to think about advice and guidelines for the programs.
