  • May 18, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit will be ready for Ohio’s boating season thanks to a recent financial boost.

According to Sheriff David Barber, the Marine Patrol received grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft, in the amount of $18,172.84. Barber said the total Marine Patrol program cost for the year is $28,685 with the balance being funded by the sheriff’s office.

The Marine Patrol, under the direction of Sgt. Tom Durbin, covers Apple Valley, Knox and Kokosing lakes from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

“Our emphasis is on promoting a safe boating season through a combination of education, vessel inspections and enforcement,” said Barber.
