MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon woman, Virginia Ann Dice, 64, was treated and released from Knox Community Hospital after her Chevrolet Equinox van was knocked off U.S. 36, 3 1/2 miles east of Millwood, on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Dice was westbound with her turn signals flashing, slowing down to turn right onto Brush Run Road. Her van was hit in the rear by a grain truck driven by James Beatty, 26, Walhonding. Beatty told the patrol the brakes went out when he attempted to slow for the Dice car.
Dice’s car went over a deep culvert embankment, landing on its front end. It flipped end over end, ending up on the left side slightly tilted toward the roof.
Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District rescuers cut through the supports on the right side of the roof, then pulled it down to rescue Dice. Using hydraulic shears, it took them about 10 minutes to cut into the van.
Patrol Trooper Grick Warner charged Beatty with unsafe vehicle.
