Historic whale returns to family

This whale weathervane was created by Roy Taylor and installed on the old pool house, which was built in 1953. It was removed when the new waterpark building was built and will be returned to Roy’s son, Scott, who lives in Florida.  (Virgil Shipley)

Hudson honored as hero by City Council

Kiwanis honored at Foundation Park

Kiwanis Club immediate past president Dennis Murray, left, talks with Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis about the club’s contribution to the pavilion addition to the restrooms at Foundation Park. The club’s annual chicken dinners raised $12,000 for part of the cost of the pavilion. Kiwanis held its noon luncheon and dedication ceremony in the new pavilion on Monday. Mavis told the club a master plan will be developed this year for future projects, which include trails connecting the trail along the old Pennsylvania railroad bed and installing the 1884 bowstring truss bridge as a pedestrian walkway. Mid-Buckeye Conference honors spring athletes

The Mid-Buckeye Conference honored its spring athletes at a banquet on Monday night at Troyer’s Dutch Heritage Restaurant in Bellville. In the front row, from left, are Fredericktown coach Matt Smith, Baseball Coach of the Year; Danville’s Hannah Matheny, Softball Player of the Year; East Knox’s Taylor Jones, Boys Track Runner of the Year; East Knox coach Jason Ewalt, Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year; and Fredericktown’s Tayler Carpenter, Girls Track Runner of the Year. In the back row, from left, are Fredericktown’s C.J. Freddies’ Potes on record pace

Fredericktown’s Isaac Potes competes in the 1,600-meter run during the 2010 SpecTRACKular at Mount Vernon High School on May 7. Potes broke the school record in the 1,600 on Saturday and is aiming for a spot on the podium at the Division III State meet.  (Zach Tuggle)
