  • Clouds clear in time for MV parade

MOUNT VERNON — The rain and dark clouds disappeared just in time for the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade.

The Mount Vernon Post of the Civil War Sons of Union Veteran was named the best walking unit in the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday. The Mount Vernon High School marching band, along with the East Knox High School band, provides music for the Memorial Day celebration. The award for best float in the annual Memorial Day Parade went to Mount Vernon Post 95 and Ladies Auxiliary. Henry Underwood’s World War II three-quarter-ton Dodge truck won best vehicle in the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade.

Approximately 90 units participated Monday in the parade on East High Street that culminated in an hour-long event on Public Square. Master of ceremonies Ron Staats kicked off the event with a quote from Francis A. Walker.

“We come this day not to mourn our dead soldiers. We come this day to praise them,” he said.

“Hero’s ... One and All” were honored during the ceremony, which included the placing of wreaths on the monument by Anna Kinnard of the Gold Star Mothers and Nancy Vail of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Alex Lambert, Cody DeVolld and Jordan Hedges each read essays on what Memorial Day meant to them, while Brittanie Jacobs read a poem on the subject.
