DANVILLE — The Danville Memorial Day Parade started early to try to beat the bad weather looming on the horizon. Nonetheless, it did rain on the parade.

The Danville High School Marching Band got drenched, but carried on in the Danville Memorial Day parade on Monday. In spite of a forecast for rain and lightning, a large crowd gathered for the memorial Day Parade in Danville. Even though the post-parade Memorial Day ceremony at Danville Memorial park was canceled because of heavy rain and lightning, local Scouts carried out their traditional raising and lowering of the American flag to half-staff, to honor veterans who died serving their country. The Danville Memorial Day parade parade came down Market street as usual, starting about 20 minutes early to try to beat the predicted rain. The rain came and shortened the parade. Parade onlookers found whatever shelter they could when the Danville Memorial Day parade was rained out on Monday. High winds along with heavy rain caused local Scouts to struggle with their flag in the Danville Memorial Day parade on Monday. Veterans from American Legion Post 650 led the rain-shortened Memorial Day Parade in Danville on Monday.

Area residents were out in full force for the parade in spite of weather predictions. Many stayed to the end, finding shelter where they could or unfurling their umbrellas. But the downpour was too heavy and many wound up leaving before the rain-shortened parade was over.

One feature of Danville’s Memorial Day celebration was still carried out, when local Scouts raised the American flag, and then lowered it to half-staff to honor those who had died for their country.

But because of the heavy rain and lightning the ceremony, scheduled to take place in Danville Memorial Park, was canceled.

Mike Beheler, a teacher at Danville High School, was scheduled as the speaker.
