Sinkhole appears in alley

This small sinkhole appeared in Plum Alley overnight, just to the south of The Living Center at Chestnut Street. Carl Ormdorf of the city’s engineering department found solid ground 4 feet down. He determined the cause of the sinkhole was not a leak in water or sewer lines, and speculated it was fill dirt not properly compacted that had sunk away. The street department will fill in the hole. A smiliar hole also appeared today in the parking lot east of the MOTA garage. It has been filled.  (Virgil Shipley)
