  • Half mile of Mohican trail will be paved

MOUNT VERNON — During a meeting with the Knox County Commissioners on Thursday, Kim Marshall, director of the Knox County Park District, discussed the use of some of the Community Development Block Grant funds for pavement of just over a half mile of the Mohican Valley Trail from the Bridge of Dreams to the Holmes County line.

“This project, I think, will really boost the local tourism opportunities and create a more refined recreational product at the Mohican Valley Trail,” said Marshall. “This is really a good opportunity in terms of timing because next year the Holmes County trail will build the tunnel under U.S. 62 and bring their paved trail down from Glenmont to the county line.”

Preliminary estimates for the paving come in at $34,241. This would include a 10-foot wide asphalt trail with a 2-foot gravel berm on both sides.

“There is no signage that needs to happen so we are just talking about strictly paving,” said Marshall. “And this would still allow for a buggy to pass.”

A big draw to the MVT is the Bridge of Dreams, which was completed in 1998 and is the largest covered bridge in Ohio. With the start of guest logging two years ago, it has received more than 11,000 recorded visitors and continues to receive visitors.
