FREDERICKTOWN — There was a time — in 1952 — when a young man made the decision to join the Army before graduating from high school. There was a time — Saturday evening — when that man, albeit a few years older, received the high school diploma he earned 58 years ago.

After joining the Army, Dick Tanner soon found himself in the Korean conflict. He served his time honorably, and after his discharge, returned home, married and raised three children, all Fredericktown High School graduates. He has been actively involved in local activities, including working toward passage of the recent school levy.

“He has been unselfish to his community,” said James Peterson, superintendent. “Now we have the opportunity to give him something. ... You students are here because of people like Mr. Tanner. Use your education you have received to give back.”

The seniors and the audience responded with a standing ovation when Tanner received his diploma.

“It’s wonderful. That sums it up,” said Tanner of receiving his diploma. “Oh, my, it’s just wonderful.
