CENTERBURG — Centerburg Village Council gave approval to continue the RITA Subpoena Program on Monday night.
The program sends subpoenas to village residents who fail to file income tax statements. In turn, it sends auditors to the village to accept those statements on specified dates at a rate of $8 per statement. In 2009, according to Molly Thompson, deputy clerk, the village took in revenue of approximately $5,000 at a cost of $1,640.
“I think we should make sure we see reports and can re-evaluate the program before giving long-term approval,” said Councilman Randy McLarnan.
Thompson assured McLarnan and the rest of council that she does receive statements every year with exact figures of what the program costs for the year and the amount of revenue generated.
“It is a good program. I think we should do it,” Thompson said.
