MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon City Council met briefly Monday night to pass two pieces of legislation.
The first dealt with filing an application for Community Development Block Grant money in the amount of $80,000. The money will be used for curb and sidewalk repairs on North Mulberry Street, from Burgess Street north.
Councilwoman Nancy Vail questioned why the $80,000 was being put toward curb repair rather than brick street repair.
“I think we need to expedite this brick street program,” she said. “We’ve come a long way, but it’s going to be our lifetime before we see them repaired.”
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis said the money had to be used in a low- to moderate-income area and that the city has appropriated other money for brick street repair. In addition, he said, the traffic count on Mulberry Street was a factor, plus the fact the money would not be available until October, which meant the project would actually be done next year.
The second resolution authorized the safety-service director to advertise for bids and enter into a contract for asphalt paving materials. Both resolutions were passed after waiving the three required readings.
