MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Board of Education celebrated a plethora of student achievements on Monday, June 7. It issued formal recognition to medalists in the National Spanish, Latin and French examinations, commended scholar athletes, and recognized a number of spring sports athletes and their coaches.
The board also honored retirees and gave a “Behind the Scenes” award to Mary Joan Neighbarger. Neighbarger, said middle school secretary Mollye Ashbrook, “is always here.”
“She always has something to do,” said Ashbrook. “She works in the guidance office every day and also helps with volleyball and basketball games. That’s why she was nominated for the award.”
Treasurer Barb Donohue said the rest of the meeting was largely routine. Besides approving routine fiscal actions, the board accepted the following donations: $500 to the middle school jazz band from Lois Wright, an office desk to the music department from Gary McCutcheon, and the book “Navy Seals in Action” to the middle school library in memory of Jack White, father of Middle School Principal Bill White.
