MOUNT VERNON — The American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, will hold its 14th annual Relay for Life event at the Fredericktown High School track beginning Friday at 6 p.m. and ending on Saturday at noon.
“We have 23 teams this year and we hope to raise over $130,000,” said event chairwoman Jody Rutter.
One of the highlights of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony, which begins Friday at 10 p.m. During the event, people may purchase a luminaria in memory or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer. The luminaria bags are placed around the track and lit during a memorial program.
“I encourage everyone to come out to the event to cheer on cancer survivors during the opening ceremony and to remember everyone touched by cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk,” said Rutter. “We invite all local cancer survivors, family and friends to attend.”
