  • June 24, 2010 11:40 am EDT

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a residence on Howard Street on Wednesday afternoon, when a 9-1-1 call reported a hostage situation.

With the assistance of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Mount Vernon Fire Department, a temporary command post was set up near the area as units responded.

With a threat of the situation worsening if officials arrived, the residence was first approached by detectives of the Mount Vernon Police Department in plain clothes.

Upon arrival, it was discovered there was no hostage, but a woman had been holding a knife to a man inside the residence as she spoke to Knox County 9-1-1 operators. The man was released prior to the arrival of officers. The woman was found outside the residence and was detained until it could be determined that she was not a threat to herself or others.

The man was checked by medics at the scene for previous medical conditions that may have been magnified due to stress. The woman was transported to Knox Community Hospital to be evaluated.

No injuries were reported and no charges are expected to be filed.\
