HOWARD — Olivia Bates, 10, of Howard is one of 117 Ohio youth who were recognized by Kohl’s for making their communities a better place to live.
Olivia was honored for her efforts to help breast cancer patients. Vicki Bates, Olivia’s mother, said the youngster has been making fleece tie pillows to sell. Proceeds from the sales, which total more than $1,100 to date, are donated to the Knox Foundation and used by Knox Community Hospital to purchase mammopads. Olivia also has a Web site called Frog Foundation to help her fundraising efforts.
Vicki said Olivia was surprised and “so excited” about the Kohl’s award.
“Her aunt Marlene was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009,” Vicki said, “and was the inspiration for her pillow crafting. That’s who nominated Olivia for the award. It was a wonderful surprise to all of us.”
