MOUNT VERNON - Tree identification week is being conducted this week in Mount Vernon parks. The survey is being done to better manage the city’s urban tree forest to identify the variety of trees, and to count and measure the size of each tree.
On Thursday morning Troy Cooper, OSU Extension Knox County, and Knox County Commissioners Allen Stockberger and Bob Wise were measuring and counting trees in city parks.
They are part of 12 teams of volunteers, made of mostly members of the Mount Vernon Shade Tree Commission and Master Gardeners Club, that are counting other trees in city parks.
Cooper said it is hoped this survey will be the start of an effort to identify and measure trees in all the villages and parks in Knox County.
The program started in May with a meeting of all parties. Cooper said he is meeting with Centerburg volunteers this month to organize a survey in their village and parks. He added the survey should be made every 10 years.
Thursday’s efforts started at the intersection of Harcourt and Columbus roads, which has mostly young trees. Cooper said they were about 15 years old and in good condition.
At Riverside Park about a half dozen of the trees have issues. One large old tree along Riverside Drive was marked with a blue paint dot indicating it is to be removed. There are indications of much decay on the tree, Cooper explained.
