MOUNT VERNON — A multitude descended on Mount Vernon’s Memorial Park, Friday, with individuals and families arriving early to stake out a good vantage point for the traditional Independence Day fireworks display.
In addition to picnicking and playground fun, early arrivals at the park enjoyed an extreme skateboarding and biking demonstration sponsored by Chris Curphey of BlueBox Clothing. The large crowd was wowed by board expert Tyler Davis and the aerials performed by biker Ivan Bisset.
A competition for local youth followed the demonstration. Andrew Vermillion, a judge for the past two years, enjoyed the chance to compete for himself. He won the advanced rollerblade contest, which he said was “fun.” Chance Smith won the beginning rollerblade match. Davis won the advanced skateboarding contest and Bolton Jones was the beginners’ champion.
Trevor Taylor of Apple Valley was there to watch the skateboarding, but intended to stay and watch the fireworks as well. He had no other specific plans for the weekend.
