Rotten tree removed
The center of this hugh silver maple tree at 506 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, was revealed to be rotten inside after a car hit it a couple of weeks ago, knocking off the outer bark and wood. Mount Vernon Safety-Service Director Dave Glass said the deteriorated condition of the tree is considered an emergency. Blue Denim Tree Removal removed it Monday afternoon under a contract with the city. (Virgil Shipley)

Mount Vernon All-Stars win state title
The Mount Vernon 16- to 18-year-old All-Star team won the Senior Babe Ruth State Championship in Mount Vernon over the weekend, and will go to the Babe Ruth World Series in August.
