MOUNT VERNON — Work will begin soon on the old American National Can property.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis said he and other city officials met with representatives of Burgess and Niple, an engineering firm chosen to do the assessment of the industrial property on the northwest side of the city. After the procurement process is finished, the engineering firm will begin work sometime in late August, Mavis said.

Burgess & Niple will drill 15 shallow monitoring wells, two large monitoring wells, use ground-penetrating radar and take 70 soil borings of the property. Mavis said there were two studies already completed and the company will not redrill in the same areas. One spot he said they will definitely look at is the dump site by the Kokosing River.

Once the company has concluded the drilling of wells and taken all the samples it needs, it will assess them, determining what is in the soil, how many contaminants are there and what it will cost to clean up the 44-acre property.
