MOUNT VERNON — First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon, at 106 N. Gay St., will welcome guest speaker Howard Storm as part of its Leadership, Equipment and Praise service series at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Storm will recount his near-death experience, a descent into Hell and his subsequent conversion.
A former art professor, Storm is now pastor at Covington United Church of Christ in Covington, and continues to paint. He has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and Discovery Channel.
Born in Massachusetts, Pastor Howard Storm is a former art professor and chairman of the art department at Northern Kentucky University. He is best known as the author of the book “My Descent into Death” about his near-death experience. The book was originally published in 2000, and after being noticed by author Anne Rice and supported by her, the book was acquired by Doubleday and republished as a hardback book in 2005.
Pastor Jonathan Fettig of First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon is familiar with Storm and his family as he grew up in the same hometown as Storm, Fort Thomas, Ky., just 15 minutes from Northern Kentucky University.
“I still remember details of him sharing God’s love and how it impacted me,” said Fettig. He told of times watching old VHS tapes belonging to his parents and recalling “his teachings spoke to me in a way unlike nothing ever had before. He speaks in a very intimate and profound manner about how God passionately loves us so.”
