  • August 17, 2010 10:56 am EDT

MOUNT VERNON — Following a cab driver’s charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence, Safe Cab will close for a monthlong suspension starting Sept. 1.

According to Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. George Hartz, Virgil Byrd’s personal cab license was suspended in an administrative license suspension following his arrest for OVI on Friday night. He will not be permitted to drive a cab for one year.

Byrd’s wife, Lillian, told the News this morning the Taxi Board ruled on the business’ fate.

“We are going to be open for a while and then we are going to have serve a suspension,” she said. “We are going to be closed for a month starting Sept. 1. I don’t know if we will reopen after that.”

She indicated they would use their remaining drivers until then.

Hartz confirmed Byrd was not operating a Safe Cab vehicle at the time of his arrest.
