MOUNT VERNON — Area veterans were treated to another round of “Thank you” on Wednesday when the Knox County Veterans Service Office hosted an open house with refreshments, entertainment and a fun time of gathering with friends.
“This event falls right in line with our global outreach efforts,” said Veterans Service Office Director Kevin Henthorn. “Much like the fairs and festivals we attend, this is just another outreach event intended to bring people in and give them an opportunity to meet our staff, get some information about our services, and just have a fun and enjoyable day.”
The local Veterans Service Office provides information and services to area veterans whenever a need arises. New services available this year at the VSO are post-traumatic stress counseling and a wellness clinic, according to Henthorn. Medical services, transportation and gasoline vouchers are popular services at the VSO.
David Toney, a 25-year Air Force veteran, came out to the open house for the entertainment and camaraderie.
“If I have an issue, I may call Kevin,” said Toney, who explained that veterans may be losing some benefits and funds, and that they need the help of senators and state representatives to keep their benefits active.
“I’ve been coming here for seven years,” said George Simpkins, an Army veteran who served in Germany during the Vietnam war. “They often take me to the VA Clinic when I have a need. They have been really good to me here; I have no complaints.”
Along with the food and fellowship, entertainment was provided by Ma and Pa’s Karaoke who donated their time for the event. The AMVETS Post 95 donated a dunk tank, and local veterans also provided the use of tents for the day.
“They’re very helpful here,” said Eddie Roskowski, an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. “I come here for hearing assessments, and they take good care of me when I need medical appointments.”
