  • A new ventilation system designed to improve humidity and temperature conditions in the pool area is one change planned for the YMCA of Mount Vernon. Pat Crow Badly damaged by the fire which destroyed the adjoining building, the structure on the corner of East College and North Main streets in Fredericktown was taken down Monday by Tom Swihart Excavating. Building owner Brad Swihart said he “didn’t want to see it go,” but had little choice. Other than removing remnants of the building, Swihart has no plans for the site at this time. Mount Vernon City Councilman Jay Maners presented a proclamation and flowers to staff members of Country Club Retirement Campus after they assisted him following an injury. After being dropped off at the middle school, high school students walk to their building on the Howard campus. The Mount Vernon City School District opened classes today for the 2010-11 school year. Rehearsing for the upcoming Mount Vernon Players’ production of “Thespians” are, from left, Rachel Frady, Adam Burley, Dayne Baughman and Amy K. Stoner. Patrons at Eats and Sweets in Fredericktown said they have no qualms about ordering eggs. The restaurant uses fresh eggs from local farmers. One customer was looking forward to consuming these fried eggs prepared by cook Tammy Butler. The Wayne Grange booth won the Subordinate Booths competition at the Knox County Fair. The Jefferson Junior Grange booth won the Junior Booths competition at the Knox County Fair. The Kenyon men’s soccer team returns its leading scorer Felix Hoffmann to this year’s squad. Mount Vernon’s Candice Jaymes returns a volley during her match with Mansfield Madison’s Alyssa Long. Jaymes and the Jackets won the match.
