Vandalism, loitering problems downtown
Young people gather most Friday nights at this city-owned parking lot they have nicknamed the “Hillbilly Parking Lot” at the corner of East Ohio Avenue and South Main Street. The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to at least one fight at the lot over the summer, and property owners in the area say their buildings have been vandalized. (Melissa Raines)

Safe sidewalks
Work is progressing on the Wooster Road sidewalk project. This section, near Moundview Cemetery, had to have the area built up so there was room to put in the sidewalk. The new sidewalks are part of a Community Development Block Grant awarded to the city for projects that include sidewalks on Wooster and Sychar roads and Pleasant Street. (George Breithaupt)

Area softball roundup
Jess Wellman of Mount Vernon was recently selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., on Sept. 3 and 4. The QDSS, now in its fourth season is one of the largest fastpitch softball showcases of its kind in the U.S. Wellman currently plays third base, shortstop and first base for Buckeye Heat 95.
