MOUNT VERNON — Options for solid waste disposal plans were discussed when the Knox County Commissioners met Thursday afternoon with Larry Cooper, director of the Delaware-Knox-Marion-Morrow Solid Waste District.

The main question being posed was “does Knox County want private or public ownership in their solid waste collection?”

The DKMM Solid Waste District has submitted a 15-year plan which includes a description of programs and projections for solid waste generation, recycling and disposal. Cooper explained that it’s his responsibility to manage these programs and develop proposals in order to get a response from multiple businesses. “It has to be a public entity, and it has to serve the public’s best interest,” said Cooper.

Commissioner Allen Stockberger explained that Knox County is searching for a provider for their recycling program since their contract with Sims Recycling expires next spring.
