  • August 28, 2010 1:19 am EDT

MOUNT VERNON — The Central Ohio Joint Fire District was called to a house fire at 5093 Johnstown Road, just south of Sycamore Road, on Friday afternoon. The call came in at 1:13 p.m., according to COJFD Chief Joe Porter, who then called for assistance from Mount Vernon, Homer and Hartford fire departments.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a kitchen and utility room/porch area in flames on the first floor of the house. The fire was under control in about 15 minutes, said Porter, with structural damage mainly isolated to those rooms. Cause of the fire was unknown at press time.

The home is reportedly occupied by Cindy Carter and her boyfriend, Willard Powelson, as well as nine children. Nobody was home at the time of the fire.
