MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis said Friday that residents should be wary of door-to-door salesmen claiming to represent natural gas suppliers.
“Because this is the time of year when natural gas contracts are up for renewal,” he explained, “we apparently have people going door-to-door in the city from other companies.”
He said there have been complaints that the solicitors have agressively told residents they represent the city of Mount Vernon, and asked to look at their gas bill.
“If people are doing that, they do not represent the city,” Mavis said. “They are a private enterprise. Residents should ask whether the salesman has a permit from the Mayor’s Office, and should ask to see that permit. Even Volunteer Energy, which is our current carrier, would not be going door-to-door.”
Mavis said residents may report such incidents to the Mayor’s Office.
