Remembering 9/11

The Mount Vernon Fire Department hosted a commemorative program Saturday morning in observance of the ninth anniversary of 9/11. Members of the MVFD’s honor guard raised the flag and then lowered it to half staff. Charles Swank served as speaker for the brief ceremony that included moments of silence at the same times the twin towers were hit in New York City. Members of local law enforcement and fire departments, as well as community members, were also in attendance.  (Virgil Shipley)

Store cleared

Mount Vernon firefighters Lt. Eric Rutter, left, and Chief Shawn Christy leave the Dollar General store on Coshocton Avenue after checking a report of a natural gas leak this morning. The Mount Vernon Fire Department answered the call at about 8:35 and evacuated two employees. Christy said the fire department gas detection meters showed no high levels of gas. He said they were waiting for Columbia Gas to arrived to further investigate the gas levels.  (George Breithaupt)

A cold ride

What it is like to sit down in a bathtub fall of ice-cold tomato juice infused water shows clearly on the face of Fredericktown Baptist Church Pastor Mary Miller. Along with pushers Jacob Haip and John Dowalter they managed a second place showing Saturday and won $50 in the minister’s challenge bathtub race at the Fredericktown Tomato Show.  (Virgil Shipley)

Best costume

The Best Costume award went to this float in the Fredericktown Tomato Show Parade on Saturday. It depicts Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.  (Virgil Shipley)

Auction lands strike up the middle

The 2010 Fredericktown Tomato Show Plate Auction raised over $7,000 to support the annual festival. Ten plates were auctioned. The winners are pictured with their plates. Webb, Roberts fastest in Fredericktown Five Mile Run

Fourteen-year-old Emily Roberts of Fredericktown was the overall women’s winner of the Fredericktown Five Mile Run, Saturday, during the Tomato Show, with a time of 32:53.  (Melissa Raines)

Lady Jackets post memorable win
