  • Hiawatha School on Sychar Road school stands as a shell of itself, waiting for demolition to make room for a future fire station. Hiawatha School on Sychar Road opened in 1922, serving as an elementary school and later as a partial middle school. Additional classrooms were added in 1952, and the school was closed in 1963 due to deteriorating conditions. The 2010 Heart of Ohio Tour special section appears in Wednesday, September 29, 2010 edition Mount Vernon’s Chelsie Hayes (19) and Watkins Memorial’s Shelby Jude try to head the ball away from each other during their match Tuesday at Mount Vernon. The teams played to a 1-1 tie. White Oak Farms won the Mount Vernon 10 & Under Fall Softball League tournament with Sunday’s victory over CES Credit Union.
